Many of you may get surprised hearing the news that the food and beverage company PepsiCo Inc will start selling its smartphone in China. The company said that they are currently working with a licensing partner to launch a line of phones and accessories in China within few months.

However, PepsiCo Inc is not going to start mobile phone manufacturing business, a spokeswoman from the company mentioned it by email. She said that this effort is somewhat similar to the globally licensed Pepsi products which include accessories and apparel. However, the phone will only be available in China. The Spokeswoman did not give any further details or mention the name of the licensing partner.

The news first came from the technology website Mobipicker on October 11. They reported that the food and beverage company is going to release a smartphone, dubbed Pepsi P1 with decent but not high-end features on October 20.

This is not the first time Pepsi is working on a different category, they have many licenses for a number of categories. In 2014, PepsiCo tied up with companies such as Bang and Olufsen (Danish luxury stereo and TV maker), and Del Toro (An Italian shoemaker) for several products for its football campaign.

However, Pepsi is not the only company, many tech brands are also following the same footstep, they are looking at non-tech options also. Apple is planning to work on a car, and Google too is following this path.
